BARNES ELEMENTARY

This project is a simple one, but one that is very needed.  Barnes Elementary has a large number of students at or below the poverty level. Barnes students regularly come to school hungry,  for some some of them only foods they have are the meals they get at school.  This project supplies a small food pantry that students can come to when they are hungry.

This project supplies a small closet of clothes that students can access in times of need.

This grant allowed Barnes to provide instruction around the most commonly communicated words. This will allow students to improve their functional communication skills. This project will include a total of 8 core word activities across four different classrooms.  Core words have been the communication focus of all four significant disabilities classrooms.

This grant assisted teachers in improving their instructional practices through intentionally structuring training and support for all Kelso School district's instructional coaches. The target was for elementary and middle school cluster teachers in the highly capable program.

Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program designed to increase student motivation in the area of reading and expose students to quality literature.  The grant purchased 25 books for the program. ​

This grant allows Butler Acre students to access books from anywhere at anytime through the use of technology devices at school and home.  Students will have online access through an online app and the website Raz Kids.

This grant will assist in offering more hands-on musical opportunities for students, work on life-long learning skills, and give them an applied understanding of the curriculum. The monies will be used to purchase school copies of the methods books needed for each student.

This RIF Program has historically provided free book distribution for K-3 throughout the district.  Unfortunately, it is no longer available. The grant provides Butler Acres to continue to provide students with free books.

This grant provided two portable green screens, stands and laptop cameras with built in microphones for communication  and recording purposes.  The grant also purchased green screen kids size body suits and face covers for special effects lessons and story building. Students/staff can all with free downloadable green screen apps on the already present iPads in the classroom.

This grant will provide to portable Qball wireless microphones to be used in participating classrooms on a rotating basis. The Qball is an effective tool in large and small group settings. The Qball helps ensure that everyone can be heard clearly, especially students who tend to be shy or soft spoken.

This grant will purchase Fitness Finders that track students laps as well as help the instructors set goals for each student. Catlin Running Club is an intermural program that meets twice a week in the mornings to encourage walking/running and overall fitness.

Cardio Drumming is a non-competitive, high energy, group workout combining dance/rhythm and fitness. The grant will purchase the exercise stability ball, a stand and the drumsticks needed for each student participating.

This grant will purchase a 5 gallon water dispenser for use in a portable classroom at Coweeman Middle School. One physical reality of teaching in a portable is the student learning time lost for students needing to leave to get water in the main building.  The dispenser has cut down on students leaving the classroom.

"Salmon Release"

This grant payed for teacher substitutes and bus expenses needed to take students to the Kalama falls Hatchery for a tour. During the hatchery tours students helped feed the salmon stock and participated in clipping or tagging salmon while being  supervised by hatchery personnel.

HUNTINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL

"Destination Imagination"

This grant will help fund the Destination Imagination (DI) international STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) problem solving competition. DI is a unique program that will help students learn about the creative process, interpersonal skills, critical thinking, project management, team building, conflict resolution and perseverance while having fun.

"Herb Garden Kits & Seeds"

This grant allowed HMS students to use the AeroGarden Grow System in FACS classroom to discover and utilize growing fresh herbs as an alternative to dried herbs and the usage of table salt.  FACS will use this system each semester when studying healthy nutrition and cooking.

This grant assisted the high school choir and its booster club in providing robes for the concert choir performances.

"Spanish Novels"

This grant purchased a wide variety of novels written specifically with the new language learners and readers in mind while telling stories that are interesting and relevant to teenage students. Forty-six leveled Spanish novels were added to the Kelso High School library both for use by students in the Spanish language program as well as any students school wide who wish to improve their Spanish skills.

"Caring Connections"

Caring connections aims to provide education for teen parents regarding: personal self-care including mental health, infant, toddler, and early childhood mental health and development, and connection to educational and career development opportunities within the community. The grant will provide supplies and resources not provided by the mental health professionals who volunteer there time.

This grant helped the Kelso High School Leadership Team fund the "I am here" campaign. The KHS leadership students noticed a severe problem with student attendance levels at the high school. The money was used to make posters, provide swag bags and food incentives for students in an effort to educate and reward them about the importance good attendance. ​

This grant pays the testing fees for KHS automotive students to have the opportunity to take the tests necessary to become industry certified in different areas.

The welding classes at KHS require a lab fee of $15 per trimester.  49% of our students are on a free or reduced lunch program which identifies them as financial need students.  The grant monies assist those students with their welding fees.

The forestry classes at KHS include a project of building a fishing pole and requires a lab fee of $25. 49% of our students are on a free or reduced lunch program which identifies them as financial need students.  The grant monies assist those students with their project fees.

This grant provided financial support for students who did not have the resources to pay testing fees. The test allows students to earn high school credits toward graduation requirements for their skills in their native language.

This grant will purchase gift cards to be used by administrators to reward good citizenship and outstanding performance in the classroom demonstrated by KHS students. ​

This grant was awarded to the KHS counseling center to improve their efficiency, through increasing the use of technology to better support the district's mission to improve Social/Emotional Learning for all students.  The grant will purchase a Chromebook stand which will make technology more accessible to all students.

This grant will purchase the needed equipment to make the current KHS Photo Studio capable of taking Senior Portraits for low income seniors who may not be able to get professional photos taken. The program will be ran by the yearbook class.

This grant will purchase English Language Learner (ELL) students subscriptions to Scholastic Upfront magazine.  The magazine content is written at an appropriate level for these students and will help build their confidence and language skills.

This grant helped provide access to science lab equipment to supplement the online curriculum used with the Kelso Alternative Program.  The money purchased lab kits that helped Kelso Virtual Academy, Loowit and Kelso High School students gain a more meaningful understanding of scientific concepts.
